The Benebikira Sisters

A Dedication to Service

The mission of the Benebikira Sisters Foundation (BSF) is to support Catholic organizations and programs, such as the Benebikira Sisters, an indigenous Catholic order of nuns in Rwanda, which improve the lives of war-affected individuals in Rwanda. BSF raises awareness and funding to enable such organizations to expand their work, particularly in education, health care, and to ultimately help bring about reconciliation in Rwanda and the region.

The Benebikira Sisters are leaders in rebuilding Rwanda, a nation torn by the genocide of 1994. Their current ministries include: educating over 5000 students (80% of them girls) in 7 primary schools and 13 secondary schools; supervising the catechetical teaching in 3 of the 9 dioceses in Rwanda; running and working in local hospitals and health centers; running 3 orphanages for 375 children of the Genocide; and staffing and operating guesthouses throughout Rwanda. The Sisters are a local diocesan community, living and working in all 9 dioceses of Rwanda, and in four other countries: Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, and Congo.

Our Success

In the first year of its existence, the Benebikira Sisters Foundation has been fortunate to receive two grants. In November of 2007, the Foundation received a $40,000 grant from the Raskob Foundation to initiate the Ministry of Hope, Healing and Reconciliation program, which is underway . An anonymous benefactor aided the Our Lady of the Angels school building project in December 2008. The building of the school is underway and all grant monies can be used to continue to build Phase I of the school.
